What can the Google MUM Algorithm Do?

Google MUM Algorithm

Earlier in 2021 Google introduced a brand new search algorithm called MUM (Multitask Unified Model) that can search for answers to increasingly complex questions across any language and will include images in the results. Billed as being a more intuitive way to search it has been predicted to provide users a revolutionary search experience.

What does a Google Expert say about the MUM Algorithm?

We are always keen to hear from the experts. So, what does John Mueller, the Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google say about the Google MUM Algorithm?

He’s been working at Google since 2007 and works to ensure that information flows between the webmasters and engineers. According to him, the MUM algorithm does more than affect rankings.

When asked about how many search queries were affected by the MUM algorithm, John Mueller was unable to give a precise answer. While he explained that the MUM algorithm does not give fixed percentages of results affected, he suggested that it is used across many contexts in addition to ranking.

What does the Google MUM Algorithm do?

John Mueller described MUM as a “multi-purpose machine learning library”. He explained that it will be applied to many different parts of search and can be used to understand things at a granular level amongst many kinds of search results.

John’s description refuted MUM as simply being “flashy” and instead described its function as creating opportunities for different products and queries that could massively increase what would be learned.

He suggested that while the marketing associated with Google algorithms often overplays the applications the proof in Mum’s abilities would be when improvements are seen by the end users.

How important is Google’s MUM Algorithm?

John Mueller assured us that the quality of the Mum algorithm had been tested by quality experts. With tasks beyond ranking being part of the algorithm’s remit and its ability to deal with microscopic levels of detail, it is an invaluable tool in building understanding and learning.

What makes it impressive is that it searches for results across web pages using both text and images and it is not dependent upon language.

Over the next few months, Google will lead users down new improved topic paths in a redesigned search experience and for some searches that will become more visual. Not only will answers be presented more visually but the way the algorithm works promises to answer more and more complex questions.

By anticipating the most popular paths that a query could lead to, Google will use the MUM algorithm to find more content that is relatable. The granular aspect of the algorithm described by John Mueller relates to how it uses Topic Zoom. This allows the searcher to move between related topics. In addition, when a searcher is looking for inspiration the MUM algorithm can help with visual ideas.

The good news for web developers is that the new algorithm should access more content providing they adapt their titles to describe their content accurately, moving away from using keywords.
